The best time to visit Ladakh is from the end of March to the middle of August, with June being one of the best months. The best time to go on a road trip is from June onwards, when the motorable high passes are accessible

There are several ways to get to Ladakh, whether by air, road, or rail (although rail connectivity is limited). Below are the most common and convenient ways to reach Leh, the capital of Ladakh, which is the main entry point to the region:

1. By Air (Most Convenient):

The most straightforward way to reach Ladakh is by flight, especially if you are traveling from Delhi or other major cities. Leh's Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport is well-connected to other parts of India.

Airports:

Leh Airport (Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport) (IXL) is the main airport in Ladakh.

Direct flights are available from Delhi, Mumbai, Jammu, Srinagar, and Chandigarh. Air India, GoAir, and IndiGo operate flights to Leh.

Delhi to Leh: The flight from Delhi to Leh takes around 1.5 to 2 hours and is the most popular route to enter Ladakh by air.

2. By Road:

Ladakh is famous for its scenic road journeys, and traveling by road can be an exhilarating experience. However, it’s essential to note that roads to Ladakh are closed during the winter months due to snow, and travel can be difficult during the monsoon season (June-August) because of landslides. The most popular routes to reach Leh are:

From Srinagar to Leh (National Highway 1D):

Distance: Approximately 420 km.

Route: This route is open from May to September, depending on weather conditions. You’ll travel through Sonamarg, Zoji La Pass, and Drass before reaching Leh.

Duration: It takes around 2 days to travel this route with a night stop in Kargil.

Road Conditions: The road is a mix of tarmac and rough patches, with some stretches at high altitude.

Sightseeing: On the way, you can visit places like Kargil, Mulbekh Monastery, and Ladakh War Memorial in Drass.

From Manali to Leh (Manali-Leh Highway):

Distance: Approximately 475 km.

Route: This is another famous route that opens from June to September and is more popular among adventure seekers. The route passes through Rohtang Pass, Baralacha La, Nakee La, and Tanglang La, offering some of the highest motorable passes in the world.

Duration: The journey usually takes around 2 days, with an overnight stop in Sarchu or Keylong.

Road Conditions: The road is mostly dirt and gravel with rough patches, so it requires a vehicle suitable for the terrain.

Sightseeing: On the way, you'll get spectacular views of the Himalayas and Spiti Valley, as well as iconic places like Sarchu, Tso Kar Lake, and Tanglang La Pass.

From Zanskar Valley (via Padum) to Leh:

Distance: This is a much less-traveled route and more of an offbeat option for adventurous travelers.

Route: It requires passing through Zanskar Valley, Padum, and the Suru Valley before linking up with the Leh-Srinagar Highway.

Important Considerations:

Road Conditions: Both the Manali-Leh Highway and Srinagar-Leh Highway are high-altitude roads, so driving at such altitudes can be challenging. Prepare for oxygen depletion and possible altitude sickness.

Acclimatization: It is crucial to acclimatize for at least a day or two in Leh to adjust to the high altitude before venturing on these routes.

Travel Packages: Many travelers prefer booking guided road trips or rental bikes/cars for the journey from Manali or Srinagar to Leh.

3. By Rail:

While Ladakh itself is not connected by a direct rail network, you can travel to nearby Jammu, Srinagar, or Pathankot by train and then continue the journey by road.

Jammu to Leh: The nearest railhead is in Jammu (approximately 700 km from Leh), and from there, you can take a bus, taxi, or rented car to Leh via the Srinagar-Leh route.

Srinagar to Leh: If traveling from Srinagar, you can take a train to Srinagar and then drive to Leh (approximately 430 km).

Important Considerations:

Traveling by train to Jammu or Srinagar is a good option if you want to take a more leisurely route before taking a road trip to Leh.
